Lava Tunnel, Golden Circle and South Coast
A packed summer camper loop: lava tube, Golden Circle, a hike to a warm river and the South Coast waterfalls.

July is Iceland at its most open and its most popular. Average highs sit around 13 to 15°C, every highland road that is going to open has opened, Þórsmörk and Landmannalaugar are reachable, and it never gets properly dark. The trade-off is peak prices and crowds, which is why routing and timing matter more in July than in any other month.
Our editors picked these July plans from real trips for how they handle that: early starts at the famous stops, evening visits after the day-trippers have gone, two-night stays that cut the packing, and highland days done by Superjeep where the rivers are serious. Open one, then duplicate it and make it yours.

July is the warmest month, with daytime highs of 13 to 15°C on the coast and occasionally over 20°C inland, but rain, wind and 8°C days still happen. Pack a waterproof shell, a warm layer and a hat even in July; the highlands can see sleet in any month.
For July, book flights, rental car and accommodation along the South Coast and Ring Road four to six months ahead, and popular tours (Jökulsárlón boat tours, glacier hikes, Þórsmörk Superjeeps, the Lava Show) two to three months ahead. Towns like Vík, Höfn and Mývatn sell out first.
With a 4x4 that your rental company permits on F-roads, yes: July is the surest month for open highland routes. Insurance never covers water damage, so routes with large unbridged rivers (such as the Krossá into Þórsmörk) are best done on a guided Superjeep tour. Kjölur (F35) and the southern road to Landmannalaugar are the usual self-drive choices.
