A school-age family adventure with a glacier hike, an ice cave, an iceberg boat tour and a day in the highlands.
This July plan is built for families with school-age kids who want real adventure without marathon drives. Arrival day loops the Reykjanes Peninsula to Hella, and the next day pairs Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi and Skógafoss with a guided Sólheimajökull glacier hike before Vík.
From there the route works east in easy steps: a Katla Ice Cave morning, Reynisfjara and Dyrhólaey, a night in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, then Fjaðrárgljúfur, the Svartifoss trail and a Jökulsárlón boat tour with Diamond Beach before sleeping near Skaftafell. Instead of pushing on to the Eastfjords, the family turns back west with Múlagljúfur Canyon and Eldhraun en route to Vík.
Day six is the big one: a 4x4 drive into Landmannalaugar for the Brennisteinsalda trail and Ljótipollur, with a night in Hvolsvöllur. The trip winds down with the Golden Circle, a whale watching morning in Reykjavik, a hike up Esja and a soak at Hvammsvík.
Why we picked it: It packs the big kid-pleasers, ice, icebergs, whales and a rhyolite-striped highland day, into short driving days. The out-and-back on the South Coast is a deliberate choice that keeps the pace family-sized.

Yes, with some planning. The drive in uses gravel F-roads that require a 4x4, and this plan approaches past Hjálparfoss, which is the gentler route. The Brennisteinsalda trail is a moderate hike that most school-age kids can handle, and the natural hot spring at the base is a big reward. Bring snacks and layers, since highland weather changes quickly.
Not with this structure. The plan uses the extra time for things families value: guided ice tours, a highland day, whale watching and a slower Reykjavik finish. Driving days stay short, mostly two to three hours, apart from the Landmannalaugar day. If your kids prefer variety to depth, a Ring Road would add more towns but also much more time in the car.
It depends on the operator and the tour. Standard Sólheimajökull glacier walks often accept kids from around 8 to 10, while the Katla ice cave super jeep tours tend to be more flexible. Jökulsárlón boat tours usually welcome younger children, though the Zodiac boats have stricter limits. Check each booking page for your kids' ages before you commit.
A 10-day family loop in May with long light, a tomato-farm lunch, an ice cave, two hot springs and the whale capital.
A shoulder-season loop by car: the South Coast to Jökulsárlón and back, the Golden Circle, a Snæfellsnes day and a city finale.
A summer Ring Road with a glacier hike, two unhurried nights in Vík, an iceberg boat tour and drives that rarely top four hours.
