Iceland Trip

Iceland Itineraries for Spring and Fall

The shoulder months — April and May, September and October — are many travelers’ favorite time in Iceland. Crowds thin out, prices drop, and from late August or September the nights are dark enough for the northern lights while the roads are still mostly snow-free.

These plans come from real spring and fall trips and were picked by our editors for routes that suit the season’s daylight and weather. Open one, then duplicate it and make it yours.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see the northern lights in September or October?

Yes. The aurora season runs from about late August to mid-April, and September and October are good months because nights are dark but roads are usually still clear. You need clear skies, some solar activity and a spot away from town lights.

Are Iceland’s roads open in October?

The Ring Road and main routes stay open, though snow and ice become possible in the north and east later in the month. Highland F-roads usually close in September. Check road.is and safetravel.is each morning.

Is May a good time to visit Iceland?

May is a great month: long days, green landscapes, the first puffins, and prices below summer. Some highland roads and a few seasonal services stay closed until June.
