An Eight-Day Summer Adventure From the Highlands to the Glacier Lagoon

Rhyolite ridges in Landmannalaugar, ice underfoot on Sólheimajökull and icebergs by boat, all in one 4x4 week.

Editor's pick 8 days · July Friends Medium pace Self-drive · 4x4

This is an adventure-dense plan for a group with a 4x4 and a July window, the season when the highland roads are open. It eases in with the Reykjanes Peninsula and the Golden Circle from a two-night base in Selfoss, then heads into the highlands: Hjálparfoss, the Ljótipollur crater rim, the Brennisteinsalda hike and a soak in the natural pool at Landmannalaugar, before a night in Hella.

Then the ice begins. A Sólheimajökull glacier hike follows the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss stops, and a second night in Vík leaves room for the Katla Ice Cave, Dyrhólaey and the Lava Show. Day six pushes east to Fjaðrárgljúfur, the Svartifoss trail and a Jökulsárlón boat tour, sleeping near Skaftafell.

The return west ends with a long soak at Hvammsvík Hot Springs and a final night in Borgarnes.

Why we picked it: Few 8-day plans fit the highlands, a glacier hike, an ice cave and a lagoon boat tour without wrecking the pacing. This one does, and the Landmannalaugar day is a real hiking day, not a drive-by.

Trip highlights

  • Brennisteinsalda (Sulphur Wave)
  • Landmannalaugar People's Pool
  • Solheimajokull Glacier Hike
  • Katla Ice Cave (June-September)
  • Jokulsarlon Boat Tour
  • Hvammsvik Hot Springs

Tips before you go

  • Highland F-roads usually open from late June, depending on snowmelt. Confirm on road.is before day three. The northern approach past Hjálparfoss avoids the big river fords of the southern routes.
  • Fuel up in Selfoss or Hella before Landmannalaugar. There are no stations in the highlands, and rental insurance rarely covers river-crossing damage.
  • July is peak season. Book the glacier hike, Katla ice cave, Jökulsárlón boat tour, Lava Show and Hvammsvík entry several weeks out, and match them to the times in the plan.
  • Day seven is a long transfer, over five hours from Hof. If your flight is early on day eight, consider sleeping closer to Keflavík instead of Borgarnes.

Questions about this itinerary

Do I need a 4x4 to reach Landmannalaugar?

Yes. Landmannalaugar is reached only by highland F-roads, and Icelandic law and rental contracts require a 4x4 for them. This plan was built around a 4x4 SUV and enters from the north, past Hjálparfoss, which is the gentler approach. Even so, drive slowly on the gravel, check road.is for opening dates and never cross a river you are unsure about.

Is 8 days enough to see the South Coast and the Highlands?

For these two regions, yes. This plan spends one full day in Landmannalaugar and five on the Golden Circle and South Coast, reaching as far east as Jökulsárlón. You will not see the north, the Eastfjords or Snæfellsnes. Trying to add them in eight days would cost you the hikes and tours that make this itinerary worth doing.

Can you visit an ice cave in Iceland in July?

Yes. The Katla ice cave in Kötlujökull runs tours in summer, and this plan books it from Vík on day five. The famous blue crystal caves in Vatnajökull are winter only, roughly November to March, so summer visitors rely on Katla. Book a few weeks ahead in July, and wear warm layers and sturdy shoes even on a mild day.
