A Family Camper Van Loop of Iceland, With Whales, Ice and Lava

A July Ring Road by camper van with a glacier hike, an ice cave, a lagoon boat ride and two chances to see whales.

Editor's pick 15 days · July Families Medium pace Self-drive

This counterclockwise camper van loop is built around the activities kids talk about afterward, spaced so no single day is overloaded. The Reykjanes Peninsula and Kerið ease everyone in, then the Golden Circle ends with a warm soak at the Secret Lagoon.

The South Coast gets two nights near Vík: a guided Sólheimajökull glacier hike on the first day, the Katla ice cave and the Lava Show on the second. From Skaftafell and Svartifoss the route reaches Jökulsárlón for a boat trip among the icebergs, then follows the Eastfjords coast to Egilsstaðir.

In the north, Stuðlagil and Dettifoss lead to Mývatn, then Húsavík for whale watching and on to Goðafoss and Akureyri. A long transfer to Snæfellsnes is broken up by Glaumbær's turf houses and Hvítserkur. The trip finishes with Hvammsvík Hot Springs, a second whale trip from Reykjavik and a Blue Lagoon soak on the way to the airport.

Why we picked it: It turns a two-week camper van loop into something kids will remember, with ice, lava and whales spread across the trip, and it keeps nearly every drive under about four hours.

Trip highlights

  • Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
  • Solheimajokull Glacier Hike
  • Katla Ice Cave (June-September)
  • Classic Whale Watching Husavik
  • Lava Show - Vik

Tips before you go

  • Overnight camping outside designated campsites is not allowed for camper vans in Iceland. Stick to the campsites in each base town.
  • Glacier hikes and ice cave tours set minimum ages. Check them with the operator when you book Sólheimajökull and Katla, ideally weeks ahead for July.
  • At Reynisfjara, keep kids well away from the waterline. Sneaker waves arrive without warning and have swept people off the beach.
  • Day 11, Akureyri to Grundarfjörður, is the longest transfer at nearly five hours. Use Glaumbær and Hvítserkur as leg-stretch stops.

Questions about this itinerary

Is a 15-day Ring Road trip manageable with kids?

Yes, if the days are paced well, and this one is. Most drives run three to four hours with stops every hour or so, and it spends two nights in Vík so the glacier hike and ice cave fall on separate days. Pools and hot springs, from the Secret Lagoon to Mývatn and Hvammsvík, give everyone a regular reset.

Do you need a 4x4 camper van for the Ring Road in July?

No. Every stop here is on Route 1 or on paved or well-used side roads, and the plan avoids F-roads and the highlands, which standard camper vans aren't permitted to drive. A regular 2WD camper is fine in July. Watch for strong crosswinds on the South Coast, which matter more in a high-sided van than in a car.

Are glacier hikes and ice caves suitable for children?

Often, for school-age kids. Guided Sólheimajökull hikes supply crampons and helmets and usually set a minimum age of around eight to ten, and the Katla ice cave tour reaches the ice by super jeep with a short walk. Check each operator's age limits, and have everyone bring waterproof layers and sturdy boots.
