Iceland Trip

5 to 6 Day Iceland Itineraries

Five or six days is the point where Iceland opens up. You can drive the full South Coast to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach, add the Golden Circle, or swap in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula for a quieter western loop — all without rushing.

Every itinerary here comes from a real trip and was reviewed by our editors for pacing, driving times and overnight bases. Read the day-by-day plan, then duplicate it and tailor it to your dates and travel style.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see the Glacier Lagoon in 5 days?

Yes. Jökulsárlón is about five hours from Reykjavík, so a 5 day plan usually overnights near Vík on the way out and in the Skaftafell or Höfn area by the lagoon, then drives back west. It works best when you are not also trying to fit in the north.

Is 6 days enough to drive the Ring Road?

It is possible but rushed — the Ring Road alone is about 1,320 km (820 miles), and six days means long driving days with little time at stops. Most travelers with six days get more out of the South Coast plus Golden Circle or Snæfellsnes.

Where should I stay for a 5 day Iceland trip?

Two or three bases keep packing to a minimum: Reykjavík or Selfoss for the Golden Circle, Vík for the South Coast, and the Skaftafell–Höfn area if you are going as far as the Glacier Lagoon.
