Iceland Trip

Iceland Highlands Itineraries

The highlands are the empty interior above the Ring Road: the rhyolite mountains and hot river of Landmannalaugar, the birch valleys of Þórsmörk between three glaciers, Kjölur and Sprengisandur crossing the middle of the country. They are reached by F-roads, which require a 4x4 by law, open only from roughly mid-June to September, and in places involve fording rivers that no rental insurance covers.

Every plan on this page includes at least one highland day, done the sensible way: a self-drive 4x4 on the easier roads such as the southern approach to Landmannalaugar, or a Superjeep or highland bus for Þórsmörk and anything with serious river crossings. Our editors picked them from real summer trips. Duplicate one and make it yours, and check the live F-road status before you go.

Frequently asked questions

When are Iceland’s highland roads open?

Most F-roads open between early June and early July, the easier ones (Kjölur F35, the southern road to Landmannalaugar) first and routes with big rivers last, and they close again between mid-September and mid-October when snow returns. Dates change every year with the snowpack, so check road.is or ask the F-road status checker for the road you want.

Can I drive to Landmannalaugar in a rental car?

Only in a 4x4 that your rental company allows on F-roads. The southern approach via F208 from the Ring Road and F224 has one modest ford just before the campsite, which you can park before and wade across on foot. The northern F208 and F225 have serious river crossings and are not for standard 4x4s. Highland buses run daily in summer if you would rather not drive.

Is Þórsmörk accessible without a Superjeep?

Not by car. The road into Þórsmörk (F249) crosses the Krossá and other glacial rivers that regularly flood rental 4x4s, and water damage is excluded from every insurance policy. Take the daily highland bus from Hvolsvöllur or Reykjavík, join a Superjeep tour, or hike in from Skógar over the Fimmvörðuháls pass.
