Iceland in July: what it is really like, and how to plan it

By · Iceland Lead & Content Curator· Updated

July is the full country: every F-road open, Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk and Askja all reachable, the warmest weather of the year and twenty hours of light. It is also the busiest and dearest month, with the South Coast crowded from Reykjavík to the Glacier Lagoon, so book months ahead and spend time in the highlands, the Westfjords and the east, where the crowds thin out.

Iceland in July: questions people ask

Is July the best month to visit Iceland?

For the highlands and the warmest weather, yes. For value and space, no: it is the busiest and most expensive month, and the South Coast is crowded. June and September give most of July’s access with fewer people.

What is the weather like in Iceland in July?

Mild by Icelandic standards: ten to fifteen degrees by day on the coast, warmer inland on a still afternoon, with light rain that passes and long bright spells. Wind is the thing to dress for, not cold. The ten-year averages for four towns are on this page; the week-ahead forecast is on the live weather page.

Are all F-roads open in July?

Almost always by mid-July, including Askja, Sprengisandur and the Fjallabak roads to Landmannalaugar. A wet or late spring can delay the roads with the biggest fords by a week or two, and heavy rain closes individual roads for a day inside the season. The live map on this site shows each road’s status, and its page the opening dates by year.
