Eleven Days Around Iceland in a Regular Car, With Whales, Seals and Lava

A July loop by 2WD with whale watching, the Lava Show, two nights at Mývatn and a seal-spotting detour on the Vatnsnes peninsula.

This 11-day Ring Road works in a standard rental car and leans into what younger kids enjoy most: animals, hot water and short walks. It opens with an afternoon in Reykjavik for Hallgrímskirkja and the National Museum, then pairs a morning whale watching tour with the Golden Circle on the way to Selfoss.

The South Coast day is the busiest, with Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, a Sólheimajökull glacier hike, Reynisfjara and the Lava Show in Vík. From there the route runs through Fjaðrárgljúfur and Skaftafell to a Jökulsárlón boat tour, sleeps in Höfn, and crosses the Eastfjords to Egilsstaðir and Vök Baths.

Mývatn gets two nights, so Hverfjall, Dimmuborgir and the Nature Baths never feel rushed. Goðafoss, Húsavík's Whale Museum and Akureyri follow, then the plan detours west to Hvítserkur and the Icelandic Seal Centre before a Snæfellsnes day and the Settlement Exhibition in Borgarnes.

Tips before you go

  • Glacier hike operators set minimum ages, so check before booking Sólheimajökull for young kids. If yours is under the limit, spend the time at Skógafoss and Reynisfjara instead.
  • Day 5 runs from Vestrahorn to Vök Baths with a two-hour Hengifoss hike in between. With young kids, skip the Fáskrúðsfjörður stop or turn back at Litlanesfoss to reach Egilsstaðir earlier.
  • Hvítserkur sits on the gravel Vatnsnes road. It is fine in a 2WD in summer if you drive slowly; fuel up at the Ring Road or in Hvammstangi first.
  • Book the whale watching tour, glacier hike, Jökulsárlón boat and Lava Show before you fly. July is peak season, and the plan's timings depend on all four.

Can you drive Iceland's Ring Road without a 4x4 in July?

Yes. In summer the Ring Road and every stop on this plan are reachable in a standard car, including the gravel stretch to Hvítserkur and the access road to Stuðlagil's east side, taken slowly. What a 2WD cannot do is enter highland F-roads, which this itinerary avoids entirely. Check road.is each morning for closures or roadworks before setting out.

Is the Ring Road too much driving for young kids?

It is a real commitment, and this plan is honest about it: four days run four hours or more, mostly in the east and on the way west. The trade-offs are smart, though. Mývatn gets two nights, Reykjavik is an easy first day, and long drives are broken up by short walks, pools and the Seal Centre. Pack snacks and audiobooks, and plan a stop every hour.

Where can you see seals in Iceland?

This plan covers two of the most reliable areas. On day 9, Hvítserkur and the Icelandic Seal Centre in Hvammstangi introduce the Vatnsnes peninsula, where seals haul out along the shore. On day 10, Ytri Tunga Beach on Snæfellsnes often has seals resting on the rocks, especially in summer. Bring binoculars, stay quiet and keep a respectful distance.
