Iceland Itineraries With Whale Watching

Humpback and minke whales feed in Iceland’s bays from spring to autumn, and in the right place the odds of seeing one are very high. Húsavík on Skjálfandi Bay in the north is the classic harbour, with tours from April to October and sightings on most trips in summer. Reykjavík runs tours year-round on Faxaflói, and Akureyri on Eyjafjörður is a good northern alternative.

The plans on this page each book a whale-watching tour and put it where it fits the route: a Reykjavík tour on an arrival or departure day, or a Húsavík morning inside a Ring Road. Our editors picked them from real trips for choosing the harbour that suits the season and for the timing around the drive. Duplicate one and make it yours.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for whale watching in Iceland?

June to August is peak season, with humpbacks and minke whales seen on almost every Húsavík tour and the chance of blue whales in early summer. April, May, September and October are good with fewer boats. Reykjavík tours run all year, but winter sightings are less frequent and the sea is rougher.

Húsavík or Reykjavík for whale watching?

Húsavík if your route goes north: it has the best sighting rates in the country, calmer waters inside the bay and a choice of traditional boats, rigid-hull speedboats and quiet electric sailboats. Reykjavík if you are staying in the south and west: it is convenient, runs year-round and still sees minke whales, dolphins and sometimes humpbacks.

Do you get seasick on Iceland whale watching tours?

Some people do, especially on the open Faxaflói from Reykjavík. Take a non-drowsy seasickness tablet an hour before, stay on deck looking at the horizon, and choose Húsavík’s sheltered bay or a morning tour when the sea is usually calmer. Operators lend warm overalls; bring gloves and a hat even in July.
