Iceland Itineraries With the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón is the lagoon at the foot of Breiðamerkurjökull where icebergs calve off the glacier, drift for weeks, then wash out to sea and back onto the black sand of Diamond Beach. It is about 380 km and five hours from Reykjavík on the South Coast, with the quieter Fjallsárlón lagoon ten minutes west and Skaftafell’s glacier hikes half an hour beyond that.

Every plan here reaches the lagoon, and most overnight near it so you can see it in the evening and at dawn rather than in the midday crowds. Our editors picked them from real trips for the boat tours they book, the bases they use (Hof, Skaftafell, Höfn) and for not making the lagoon a 10-hour day trip. Duplicate one and make it yours.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get to Jökulsárlón from Reykjavík?

About five hours of driving each way along the South Coast, without stops. As a day trip from Reykjavík it is a 10 to 12 hour day with little time at the lagoon, so almost every good itinerary overnights near Vík on the way and near Skaftafell, Hof or Höfn by the lagoon.

Which boat tour is best at Jökulsárlón?

The amphibious boat tour (about 35 to 40 minutes, roughly May to October) is the gentle option and takes children. The Zodiac tour (about an hour, roughly May to September) goes faster and further toward the glacier face and has a minimum age of around 10. Both sell out in summer, so book ahead. In winter neither runs, and the attraction becomes the ice caves and the frozen lagoon.

Is Diamond Beach worth visiting?

Yes, and it is free and right across the road from the lagoon car park. Ice chunks sit on the black sand in all seasons, best photographed at low sun or dawn. Never climb on icebergs at the shoreline: they roll and the surf is strong. Fjallsárlón, ten minutes west, is a quieter lagoon with its own boat tours.
