How to read this page

  • The feed grades every road section; a route's pill is its worst section. Open the route to see which section carries the grade.
  • Grades, worst first: closed or impassable; difficult (deep or drifting snow, 4x4 and daylight only); slippery (ice, packed snow or slush, winter tyres and 70 km/h); icy patches (mostly clear, ice in shade and on bridges); clear.
  • Side roads marked “not in service” are unmaintained in winter and shown as a caution, not a closure of the main road.
  • The authority is umferdin.is and the 1777 line; in an emergency, 112. This page reads their feed every ten minutes and never changes a grade.

Questions about Iceland road conditions

Is the Ring Road open today?

The verdict at the top of this page answers that from the Icelandic Road Administration feed, section by section, refreshed every ten minutes. "Closed section" means Route 1 is cut somewhere and names where; "slippery" and "icy patches" mean it is open but needs winter tyres and care.

What do "icy patches", "slippery" and "difficult" mean?

They are the road authority’s own grades, translated. Icy patches (hálkublettir): mostly clear with ice in shaded spots and on bridges. Slippery (hált): ice or packed snow along the stretch; winter tyres essential, 70 km/h or less. Snow cover and slush are graded as slippery too. Difficult (þæfingur): deep or drifting snow, 4x4 only and only in daylight. Impassable (ófært) and closed are what they say.

Can I drive the Ring Road in winter in a 2WD?

The South Coast, the Golden Circle and Reykjanes, yes, on winter tyres and on days graded clear or icy patches. The north and east of the Ring Road cross passes that are graded slippery or closed for days at a time between November and March; for those, a 4x4 with winter tyres and the flexibility to wait a day. The winter driving guide has the full rules.

When do the roads close, and how do I find out?

Storms close passes with a few hours’ notice, sometimes less. This page, umferdin.is and the 1777 phone line carry the same data. Check the morning you drive, not the night before; if a pass on your route is graded difficult or closed, stay where you are and let the planner move your nights.

Where does the data come from?

From the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (Vegagerðin) condition feed, the same data behind umferdin.is, read every ten minutes and grouped by the authority’s own route names. Each day’s worst grade per route is stored so the page can report how many days each route was clear, icy or cut in each winter month.
