Iceland weather this week: seven towns, seven days, one verdict

Read for travelers by · Iceland Lead & Content Curator· Updated

Thursday 2026-10-29 · forecast 09:02 UTC

Windy at Reykjavík today (gusts 24 m/s); windy tomorrow (23 m/s at Vík), no storm in the forecast.

On the windy days park nose-to-wind, hold the door with both hands, and keep high-sided campers off the south coast sands. Everything else goes ahead; waterfalls with a westerly wind soak the viewpoint, so take the shell.

Seven-day forecast for seven Icelandic towns from 2026-10-29. Open-Meteo forecast, refreshed every three hours; gusts are the day's maximum at 10 m. Normals are the month's mean high and low from ERA5, ten years.

How to read this page

  • Each town-day gets one grade, wind first: storm from 25 m/s of gusts, windy from 20 m/s, then snow, then rain (8 mm or more), showers (2 mm or more), else fair. A day's national grade is its worst town.
  • The towns stand for regions: Reykjavík for the capital, Reykjanes and the Golden Circle; Vík for the South Coast; Höfn for the Glacier Lagoon; Egilsstaðir for the East Fjords; Akureyri for the north and Mývatn; Ísafjörður for the Westfjords; Stykkishólmur for Snæfellsnes. Mountain passes between them are colder and windier than any of them.
  • Forecast: Open-Meteo, the same source the trip pages use for per-day forecasts and bad-weather alerts. Normals: ten years of ERA5 reanalysis averaged by month. The official Icelandic forecast and all warnings are at vedur.is; in an emergency, 112.
  • The month page has the climate normals, daylight and roads for October: Iceland in October.

Questions about Iceland weather this week

What is the weather in Iceland right now?

The verdict at the top of this page is today’s, from the Open-Meteo forecast for seven towns, one per region, refreshed every three hours. The map shows each town’s daily high and strongest gust, and the table has the next seven days for every town.

How windy is too windy to drive in Iceland?

Rental companies warn about doors and high-sided vehicles from about 20 m/s (45 mph) of gusts, and at 25 m/s and above the road authority starts closing exposed sections and driving stops being sensible. This page grades a day "windy" at 20 m/s and "storm" at 25 m/s, using the strongest gust forecast for the day.

Is the forecast reliable a week out?

For two or three days, yes; for days five to seven it shows the pattern (settled, wet, a storm coming) rather than the hour. Iceland’s weather changes in hours, so check this page or vedur.is the morning of each drive, and keep one free day in every five in winter.

How does this week compare with normal?

Each town’s row ends with the month’s normal high and low from ten years of ERA5 reanalysis data, and the key facts say how far today’s Reykjavík high is from it. A few degrees either way is ordinary; a storm is not a sign the trip is doomed, it is a Tuesday.

What should I do on a bad-weather day?

Swap the outdoor stops for pools, museums, lava caves and viewpoints you can drive to. The planner does this automatically: when tomorrow’s forecast is bad for an outdoor day it suggests real alternatives in that region, and a free day in the plan absorbs a storm without losing a night’s booking.
