Landmannalaugar, Glacier Ice and the Lava Show
Waterfalls on arrival, a Highlands hike at Landmannalaugar, then a glacier walk and the Lava Show, all in three July days.

A guided glacier hike is the one activity almost every first-time itinerary should include, and it needs no experience: the guide supplies crampons, harness and ice axe, and the walk itself is two to three hours on the ice. The two classic spots are Sólheimajökull between Skógafoss and Vík, which runs year-round and is 2.5 hours from Reykjavík, and the outlet glaciers at Skaftafell near the Glacier Lagoon.
The plans on this page each book a glacier hike and place it where it works: a morning on Sólheimajökull on the way east, or a Skaftafell walk paired with a lagoon evening. Our editors picked them from real trips for sensible timing around the drive and for leaving the afternoon free after a 3 to 4 hour tour. Duplicate one and make it yours.

No. Glaciers have hidden crevasses and moulins, and walking on them without a guide, crampons and a rope is how people die in Iceland every few years. Guided tours from Sólheimajökull and Skaftafell run daily in every season, last about 3 to 4 hours door to door, and are suitable for anyone who can walk uphill on uneven ground.
Usually 8 to 10 years for the easy introductory walks on Sólheimajökull and Skaftafell, depending on the operator, with longer and ice-climbing tours set at 12 to 16. Check the operator’s page when you book; the itineraries for families on this site only include hikes their ages allowed.
Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support (operators rent them if needed), waterproof trousers and jacket, warm layers, gloves, a hat and sunglasses; the ice reflects a lot of light. Crampons, helmet, harness and ice axe are provided. Trainers and jeans are refused by most guides.
