Vík Ice Caves to Langjökull Snowmobiles
An October loop with an ice cave, horses and the Lava Show in Vík, then a glacier snowmobile ride and a city finish.

October is the hinge between autumn and winter. Daylight falls from about 11 hours at the start of the month to 8 at the end, snow becomes likely in the north and east, and the highlands are closed. In return you get long dark nights for the aurora, empty viewpoints, low-season prices, and in the second half of the month the first natural ice-cave tours of the season.
These October plans come from real trips and were picked by our editors for routes that respect the shorter days: fewer stops per day, overnight bases close to the sights, and the South Coast, Golden Circle and Snæfellsnes rather than a full Ring Road sprint. Duplicate one and adjust it to your dates.

Whales, a glacier hike, the Katla ice cave and a northern lights hunt, all on guided tours over one autumn week.
A focused autumn road trip for friends: waterfalls, black sand, Katla's ice cave and a day on Sólheimajökull.
For the South Coast, Golden Circle and Reykjavík a 2WD with winter tyres is usually fine in October. For the Ring Road through the north and east, or any driving late in the month, a 4x4 is strongly recommended: snow and ice on mountain passes are normal by late October. Rental cars switch to winter tyres from 1 November, and many fit them earlier.
You can, but it is a winter-conditions drive with 8 to 11 hours of daylight. Allow at least 8 to 10 days, drive only in daylight, check road.is and the weather every morning and be ready to wait out a storm. Many October travelers get more from a South Coast and Snæfellsnes trip with two-night stays.
The year-round Katla ice cave near Vík and the man-made tunnel inside Langjökull run all month. The natural crystal ice caves under Vatnajökull usually open in mid to late October or November, once the ice is cold and stable enough; exact dates depend on the year.
