Two Slow Weeks Around Iceland, From Þórsmörk's Valleys to Snæfellsnes

A relaxed July Ring Road with two-night stays in Vík and Mývatn, a Superjeep day and a Snæfellsnes finale.

This two-week loop runs clockwise from Reykjavik, and most days keep the driving under four hours. After the Reykjanes Peninsula, a Blue Lagoon soak and a full day in the capital, it settles into Selfoss for the Golden Circle, then follows the South Coast waterfalls to Vík. Two nights there leave room for a Superjeep tour into Þórsmörk, an evening at Reynisfjara and the Lava Show.

From Hof the route takes in Fjallsárlón and Jökulsárlón, with a Zodiac tour among the icebergs, before Höfn. It then traces the Eastfjords to Egilsstaðir and Seyðisfjörður. The north gets real time: Stuðlagil and Dettifoss on the way in, a full unhurried day around Mývatn, and morning whale watching in Húsavík before Goðafoss and Akureyri.

Instead of racing back to the airport from the north, the plan swings west to Grundarfjörður and spends a day on Snæfellsnes, from Kirkjufell to Arnarstapi and Búðakirkja, then stops at Hraunfossar on departure day. July's long light makes the late Lava Show slot easy.

Why we picked it: It is the rare Ring Road that never feels rushed: no day tops five hours of driving, Vík and Mývatn get two nights each, and Snæfellsnes is folded in rather than skipped.

Tips before you go

  • Book the Þórsmörk Superjeep, the Jökulsárlón Zodiac and the Vík Lava Show well ahead; July departures fill early. Rental insurance excludes river damage, so leave the fords to the jeep.
  • Fill the tank in Höfn and again in Egilsstaðir. Services thin out along the Eastfjords and on the empty stretch inland toward Dettifoss and Mývatn.
  • In July it barely gets dark, so pack a sleep mask and use late evenings for Reynisfjara and Diamond Beach, after the tour buses have gone.
  • Reynisfjara's sneaker waves are a real danger. Keep well back from the waterline and never turn away from the sea, even on a calm summer evening.

Is 14 days enough to drive Iceland's Ring Road?

Yes, and it is the length where the loop stops feeling like a race. This plan covers the Ring Road plus Snæfellsnes, keeps most days under four hours of driving, gives two nights each to Vík and Mývatn, and still leaves a full day for Reykjavik. With 10 days you would have to drop Snæfellsnes or the Þórsmörk tour.

Do I need a 4x4 for this itinerary in July?

Not strictly. The roads you drive yourself are the paved Ring Road plus a few gravel spurs, such as the ones to Hvítserkur and Stuðlagil. The one highland element, Þórsmörk, is done on a guided Superjeep tour because of its unbridged river crossings. A 4x4 SUV adds comfort and clearance, but a standard car can handle this route in summer.

Where is the best whale watching on Iceland's Ring Road?

Húsavík on the north coast is Iceland's best-known whale watching base, and this plan puts a morning tour there on day 11 before Goðafoss and Akureyri. Summer is peak season, and humpbacks are commonly seen on Skjálfandi Bay. A morning departure keeps the afternoon drive relaxed. Bring warm layers and a hat even in July, since it is cold on the water.
