Iceland Itineraries With Snæfellsnes

Snæfellsnes is the peninsula two and a half hours north-west of Reykjavík that packs most of Iceland into a 200 km loop: Kirkjufell and its waterfall, the sea cliffs between Arnarstapi and Hellnar, the black church at Búðir, the lava fields and beaches of Snæfellsjökull National Park, and the glacier-capped volcano itself. It is open year-round and far quieter than the South Coast.

Every itinerary on this page spends at least a day on the peninsula, either as a loop from Reykjavík or Borgarnes or as the final leg of a Ring Road. Our editors picked them from real trips for the order of the stops and for overnights in Grundarfjörður or Stykkishólmur rather than a long day-trip. Duplicate one and make it yours.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for Snæfellsnes?

One full day covers the loop with the main stops if you stay on the peninsula the night before. Two days, with a night in Grundarfjörður, Stykkishólmur or Arnarstapi, adds the Vatnshellir lava cave, a boat trip on Breiðafjörður or a glacier tour on Snæfellsjökull and takes the rush out of it.

Is Snæfellsnes better than the South Coast?

It is quieter and more varied in a smaller area, but it has no glacier lagoon or big waterfalls on the scale of Skógafoss. First-timers with four days or less usually choose the South Coast; with five or more days, or on a return trip, Snæfellsnes is the better addition.

Can you visit Snæfellsnes in winter?

Yes. The main road around the peninsula is paved and kept open, and winter brings northern lights over Kirkjufell. Expect wind and ice on the north side, shorter opening hours, and check road.is on the morning you drive; the mountain road across the peninsula (Road 54 at Fróðárheiði) can close in storms.
