Lava Tunnel, Golden Circle and South Coast
A packed summer camper loop: lava tube, Golden Circle, a hike to a warm river and the South Coast waterfalls.

A long weekend in Iceland works best when you stay close to Reykjavík and Keflavík. In three or four days you can cover the Golden Circle, the waterfalls and black-sand beaches of the South Coast as far as Vík, and a geothermal soak, without spending your trip in the car.
These short itineraries were built by real travelers and picked by our editors for realistic driving times and a sensible order. Open one to see every stop with timing, then duplicate it and change the dates, pace and stops to fit your own trip.
A packed summer camper loop: lava tube, Golden Circle, a hike to a warm river and the South Coast waterfalls.
Skip the South Coast crowds for lava-field churches, coastal cliff walks, Kirkjufell and a hot spring on Hvalfjörður.
Waterfalls and the Katla Ice Cave, then the Golden Circle, whale watching and a final soak by the fjord.
Waterfalls on arrival, a Highlands hike at Landmannalaugar, then a glacier walk and the Lava Show, all in three July days.
Two big glacier adventures, short drives and an easy finish with a fjord-side soak before the flight home.
A low-mileage family loop of fjord hot springs, lava-field waterfalls, a crater climb and Viking-era history.
Geysers, waterfalls, a real lava show, whale watching and a Blue Lagoon soak, all in a standard rental car.
South Coast falls and a live lava show, the Golden Circle, a museum morning and a last soak in Hvalfjörður.
Three days is enough for Reykjavík, the Golden Circle and the western half of the South Coast (Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara and Vík). It is not enough for the Ring Road or the Glacier Lagoon without very long drives. Base yourself in one or two places and keep daily driving under about four hours.
A typical 4 day plan does a day on the Golden Circle, one or two days along the South Coast with a night near Vík, and a final half day in Reykjavík or at a lagoon close to the airport. Snæfellsnes Peninsula is a good alternative to the South Coast if you have been before.
Not strictly — Golden Circle and South Coast day tours leave Reykjavík daily. A rental car gives you far more flexibility with stop times and light, and a standard 2WD is fine on these paved routes outside of heavy winter conditions.
