Iceland 4x4 Itineraries

A 4x4 costs roughly twice as much as a standard car in Iceland, so it should earn its place. It does in two cases: summer highland days on the F-roads, which require four-wheel drive by law, and winter driving from October to April, when snow and ice on the Ring Road’s mountain passes make the extra traction and clearance a safety margin rather than a luxury.

Every plan here was driven in a 4x4 by the traveler who built it, and uses it: a Landmannalaugar or Kjölur day, a gravel detour to a canyon or a northern viewpoint, or a winter South Coast with proper tyres. Our editors picked them from real trips for using the car where it matters and for keeping river crossings to guided tours. Duplicate one and make it yours.

Frequently asked questions

When do you actually need a 4x4 in Iceland?

On any F-road, in every season, by law. In winter (roughly October to April) for driving the north and east, the Snæfellsnes passes or any route with mountain crossings, where a 4x4 with winter tyres is strongly recommended. For a summer trip that stays on the Ring Road, Golden Circle and South Coast, a 2WD is enough.

Can a rental 4x4 cross rivers in Iceland?

Physically, a high-clearance 4x4 can ford the smaller, slower rivers on roads like the southern approach to Landmannalaugar. Contractually, no insurance covers water damage, so one mistake can cost the value of the car. Walk the ford first, cross slowly in low gear, and leave the big rivers (Þórsmörk, F26, the northern F208) to Superjeep tours and highland buses.

Is a 4x4 worth it in Iceland in winter?

For anything beyond Reykjavík and the South Coast as far as Vík, yes. Studded or winter tyres are mandatory on all rentals in winter, but a 4x4 adds traction on icy climbs, clearance through drifted snow and stability in crosswinds, which is what gets you over the passes in the north and east. It does not shorten braking distance, so drive to the conditions.
