Iceland Trip

Iceland Itineraries for June

June is when Iceland switches fully on. The sun barely sets around the solstice on 21 June, the lupines turn whole valleys purple, whale watching and puffin season are in full swing, and the first highland roads (usually Kjölur, then Landmannalaugar from the south) open in the second half of the month. It is also when prices and crowds climb toward their July peak.

The June plans here were built by real travelers and picked by our editors for making the most of the light: late-evening waterfalls after the buses leave, long driving days without darkness, and a sensible mix of booked tours and free stops. Duplicate one and adjust it to your dates.

Frequently asked questions

Does it get dark in Iceland in June?

Not really. Around the solstice Reykjavík has about 21 hours of daylight and the remaining hours are twilight, not darkness. In the north the sun dips below the horizon for less than three hours. Bring a sleep mask and use the bright evenings for popular stops.

Are the highlands open in June?

Partly. The easier F-roads such as F35 (Kjölur) and the southern approach to Landmannalaugar typically open in early to mid-June, while routes with big river crossings open late June or early July. Dates vary by year, so check road.is or the F-road status checker before you commit to a highland day.

How busy is Iceland in June?

Busy, but less than July and August. Popular South Coast stops are crowded between about 10am and 4pm, so the plans here visit them early or late. Book accommodation, rental cars and the big tours (glacier hikes, ice caves, boat tours) at least two to three months ahead for June.
