West Iceland Itineraries

West Iceland is the part of the Ring Road most people drive through on the way to Snæfellsnes or the north: Hvalfjörður and the Glymur hike, Borgarnes, the Reykholt valley with Hraunfossar, Barnafoss and the hot spring at Deildartunguhver, Húsafell and the tunnel into Langjökull, and the lava cave at Víðgelmir. It is an hour from Reykjavík and works as a day loop or as the first or last night of a longer trip.

Every plan here stops in the west rather than passing it, with a night in Borgarnes, Reykholt or Húsafell or a proper half-day on the way. Our editors picked them from real trips for using the west as the gentle first day after landing or the easy last day before the flight. Duplicate one and make it yours.

Frequently asked questions

What is there to see in West Iceland?

Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, where a river pours out of a lava field; Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring, with the Krauma baths beside it; Reykholt and Snorri Sturluson’s pool; Húsafell with the Into the Glacier tunnel in Langjökull and the Víðgelmir lava cave; Glymur, Iceland’s second-highest waterfall, at the head of Hvalfjörður; and the Hvammsvík sea baths.

Is West Iceland worth a day?

Yes, as the easiest day trip from Reykjavík that is not the Golden Circle: an hour’s drive, paved roads all the way, two waterfalls, a hot spring, a bath and a lava cave in a loop of about 250 km. It is also the natural first or last night of a Ring Road or Snæfellsnes trip.

Where should I stay in West Iceland?

Borgarnes for the choice of rooms and the position on the Ring Road; Reykholt or Húsafell for the valley, the baths and the glacier tunnel the next morning; Hvalfjörður for Glymur and Hvammsvík within reach of the city. All are under two hours from the airport.
