Iceland Itineraries With an Ice Cave

There are three kinds of ice cave in Iceland and they have different seasons. The natural crystal caves under Vatnajökull, reached from the Jökulsárlón area, exist only from about November to March, when the ice is cold enough to be safe. The Katla ice cave near Vík, in a black-ash-streaked glacier reached by Superjeep, runs year-round. And the man-made tunnel inside Langjökull is open in every month.

Each plan here books an ice cave that actually exists in its month, which is the mistake most self-made itineraries get wrong. Our editors picked them from real trips for tying the cave to the right base (Vík for Katla, the lagoon area for the crystal caves) and for leaving a weather day, since winter tours are cancelled in storms. Duplicate one and make it yours.

Frequently asked questions

When can you visit ice caves in Iceland?

The natural crystal ice caves under Vatnajökull are open from roughly mid-November to mid-March, sometimes from late October and into early April in a cold year. The Katla ice cave near Vík and the Langjökull ice tunnel are open year-round. If you are visiting between April and October, those two are your options.

Where do ice cave tours leave from?

Crystal cave tours leave from the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon car park or from Hali and Hof nearby, usually by Superjeep, and last 3 to 4 hours. Katla tours leave from Vík. Langjökull tunnel tours leave from Húsafell, about 1.5 hours from Reykjavík, with pickups from the capital. All need booking ahead in winter.

Are ice caves safe and suitable for children?

Guided tours are safe: operators check the caves daily and cancel in warm weather or heavy rain, which is why you should keep a spare day. Most crystal cave tours accept children from about 6 to 8 years with a short walk on uneven ice; Katla and Langjökull tours have similar limits. Bring warm layers and sturdy footwear; crampons and helmets are provided.
