Full Ring Road Loop via the Eastfjords and Mývatn
A high-energy August loop with a glacier hike, a Jökulsárlón boat ride, Eastfjords waterfalls and Mývatn's craters.

The north is where Iceland feels biggest: the geothermal fields and craters around Lake Mývatn, Dettifoss (Europe’s most powerful waterfall), Goðafoss, the whale-watching harbour at Húsavík, Akureyri with its fjord and botanical garden, and the empty roads of Tröllaskagi and Vatnsnes. It is at least five hours from Reykjavík by road, so it belongs in a Ring Road or a trip of eight days or more, or a trip that flies into Akureyri.
Every plan here spends at least a night in the north. Our editors picked them from real trips for two-night stays at Mývatn or Akureyri, a sensible order for Dettifoss and the Diamond Circle, and whale-watching mornings that leave the afternoon free to drive. Open one, then duplicate it and set your own dates.

Two to three nights is the sweet spot on a Ring Road: one full day around Mývatn (Hverir, Dimmuborgir, the nature baths, Dettifoss), a Húsavík whale-watching morning, and an afternoon or evening in Akureyri. A dedicated north trip from an Akureyri flight can fill five days with Tröllaskagi and Vatnsnes added.
A 250 km signed loop in the north linking Goðafoss, Lake Mývatn, Dettifoss, Ásbyrgi canyon and Húsavík. It can be driven in one long day from Mývatn or Húsavík in summer, but two days with a night at each end is more comfortable. The road past Dettifoss (862) is paved on the west side; the east side (864) is gravel and closes in winter.
Húsavík on Skjálfandi Bay is the best-known and most reliable, with humpbacks commonly seen from May to September and tours running in rigid-hull boats, traditional oak boats and silent electric sailboats. Akureyri on Eyjafjörður is a good alternative and Reykjavík offers year-round tours with lower but real odds.
