F88 Öskjuleið (to Askja, via Herðubreiðarlindir)

Road notes by · Iceland Lead & Content Curator· Updated

F88 Öskjuleið is the northern road to Askja: about 90 km from the Ring Road east of Mývatn past Herðubreiðarlindir to the Drekagil hut, with the Lindaá and Grafarlandsá fords on the way. Both are deep and fast, which puts it in the third water tier and rules out compact 4x4s and campers; the eastern approach via F905 and F910 has gentler streams and is the one most self-drivers should use. It opens late June or early July.

Reaches: Hrossaborg crater · Herðubreið and the Herðubreiðarlindir oasis · Drekagil gorge and the Dreki hut · Askja caldera and the Víti crater (via F894)

The road

Öskjuleið leaves the Ring Road at the Hrossaborg crater and runs south through the Ódáðahraun lava desert with the table mountain Herðubreið ahead, the queen of Icelandic mountains, to the green oasis of Herðubreiðarlindir and on to Drekagil at the foot of the Dyngjufjöll. From Dreki the F894 spur climbs to the Vikraborgir car park, then it is a 2.5 km walk into the Askja caldera to the Víti crater and the lake.

River crossings and the car

The Lindaá below Herðubreiðarlindir and the Grafarlandsá are the two fords that matter: deep, fast and with soft beds, in the third water tier. A high-clearance 4x4 such as a Land Cruiser or Hilux is the minimum and many rentals exclude F88 outright. The eastern route (Route 901, F905, F910 east) has predictable small streams and is the safer self-drive approach to the same Dreki hut.

Water tier 3: Medium to large water crossings. A high-clearance 4x4 — Toyota Land Cruiser, Land Rover Defender, or Toyota Hilux.

When it opens

How itineraries use it

As a full day from Mývatn or Möðrudalur, usually by Superjeep tour, or self-drive via the eastern approach with a night at Dreki or Möðrudalur. Plans of two weeks or more with a capable car combine Askja with Stuðlagil and Dettifoss over two days in the north-east.

Questions about F88

What car do I need for Askja?

Via F88, a high-clearance 4x4 with F-road cover, because of the Lindaá and Grafarlandsá fords. Via the eastern F905 and F910 route, a standard 4x4 copes with the small streams in normal summer conditions. Campers and 2WDs cannot go either way.

How long does it take to reach Askja?

Three to four hours each way from the Ring Road on F88, plus the 2.5 km walk from the Vikraborgir car park into the caldera, so a long day from Mývatn or Möðrudalur. Tours run 11 to 12 hours.

Which approach to Askja is easier?

The eastern one: Route 901 from the Ring Road near Möðrudalur, then F905 and F910 east to Drekagil. Its streams are small and predictable, unlike the two deep fords on F88.

When does F88 open?

Late June to early July in most years, closing in September. Snow at the caldera can delay the last part; check the live status above and road.is before you drive.
