Questions about Iceland F-roads
How many F-roads are there in Iceland?
About forty numbered F-roads, plus unnumbered highland tracks. The thirteen on this page are the ones travelers ask about and plan around: the crossings (Kjölur, Sprengisandur, Kaldidalur), the roads to Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, Askja, Laki, Kerlingarfjöll and Snæfellsjökull, and the Westfjords pass. Each has its own page with live status, the dates it opened and closed each year, its river crossings and the car it needs.
Which F-roads can a normal 4x4 drive?
Those without river crossings or with only shallow streams: F35 Kjölur, F550 Kaldidalur, F570 Snæfellsjökull, F347 Kerlingarfjöll, F66 in the Westfjords, the northern F208 to the Landmannalaugar car park and the eastern F910 to Askja. A compact 4x4 handles them in summer. Roads with medium or large fords (F26, F208 south, F225, F206, F88, F249) need a high-clearance 4x4 or a super-jeep, and no rental insurance covers water damage anywhere.
When do Iceland’s F-roads open and close?
The first open in early to mid-June (Kjölur, Kaldidalur, the northern road to Landmannalaugar) and the last with big rivers in late June or July (Sprengisandur, Askja). Closures run from mid-September to mid-October. The dates move by weeks with the snow each year; the live status on each road’s page and the recorded dates by year are the real answer.
Where does the live status come from?
From umferdin.is, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration’s public feed, refreshed on these pages every 30 minutes. A daily job records each road’s state so the opening and closing dates by year are measured, not typed. Always re-check road.is on the morning you drive.
