Iceland F-road map, with the live status of every road

Map and road notes by · Iceland Lead & Content Curator· Updated

Right now 2 of 12 major F-roads are open or partly open (road authority feed as of 29 Oct 2026, 08:46). The map colours each highland road by its current state and refreshes every 30 minutes. Click a road number below the map for its own page: what it connects, its river crossings, the car it needs, and the dates it opened in past years.

Questions about the F-road map

How current is this F-road map?

The colours come from the Icelandic Road Administration feed (umferdin.is) and refresh every 30 minutes. The feed is the authority; the map is a reading of it. Before you drive, check umferdin.is and the weather, and in an emergency call 112.

What do the colours mean?

Solid green is open, amber is partly open (one section open, another closed, or passable only for large 4x4s), dashed red is closed, and grey means the feed has no row for the road right now. Every road number on the map has its own page with the details.

Are the road lines exact?

No. The lines join the landmarks each road connects (junctions, huts, passes) and show where a road runs and what it links. They are not a surveyed centreline and the map is not for navigation; use a proper road map or the umferdin.is map for that.

Can I use this map on my own site?

Yes. Embed the live image with the snippet under the map and keep the credit link to this page. The image updates on its own as roads open and close, so your page never shows a stale status.

Why are the F-roads closed for most of the year?

They are unpaved tracks over the highlands, snowed in from autumn to early summer and crossed by rivers that run high with meltwater in spring. The first roads open in early to mid-June and the last with big river crossings in late June or July; most close between mid-September and mid-October.
