F207 Lakagígavegur (Laki crater loop)

Road notes by Nimrod Ron · Iceland Lead & Content Curator· Updated
F207 Lakagígavegur is the loop road around the main Lakagígar crater row, about 20 km one way at the end of F206, with the car parks for the walk up Laki itself and the Tjarnargígur crater lake. It is driven in one direction only, has fords of the same rocky character as F206 and sits in the third water tier, so it needs the same high-clearance 4x4 and settled weather. It opens with F206 in mid-June and the rangers close it after heavy rain.

The road
At the end of F206 the road divides into the F207 loop, signed one way, which runs west along the crater row to the Laki car park, on past the lake craters to Tjarnargígur, and back to the junction. Nothing here is fast: gravel, washboard, two or three fords and a 30 km/h feel. Allow the whole middle of the day for the loop and its two walks.
River crossings and the car
Fords of the same kind as F206, with rocky, uneven beds that are harder than their depth suggests. Third water tier: a high-clearance 4x4 such as a Land Cruiser or Hilux with F-road cover, and a dry forecast. The rangers at the Laki hut and in Kirkjubæjarklaustur know the state of each ford that morning. A compact 4x4 that has managed F206 in dry weather will manage the loop; after rain neither is sensible.
Water tier 3: Medium to large water crossings. A high-clearance 4x4 — Toyota Land Cruiser, Land Rover Defender, or Toyota Hilux.
When it opens
With F206, in mid-June most years, closing in late September. The loop is also closed inside the season for a day or two after heavy rain, when the fords rise and the track is damaged. Recorded dates are below; the live status above is for F206 and F207 together, as the authorities report them.
Daily recording of F207's status began in October 2026; the first measured opening and closing dates appear here in summer 2027. The typical window above is the best guide until then.

How itineraries use it
Always as part of the Laki day from Kirkjubæjarklaustur or Vík, by Superjeep tour for most travelers and by self-drive for the few with the right car and weather. The loop is the day’s reward: the Laki summit walk takes about an hour, Tjarnargígur twenty minutes.

Is F207 a different road from F206?
Yes: F206 is the 45 km road from Kirkjubæjarklaustur up to the Laki district, and F207 is the one-way loop around the crater row at its end. You drive F206 to reach F207, so the car, the weather and the opening dates are the same for both.
How long does the Laki loop take?
About an hour and a half of driving with the stops, plus an hour for the walk up Laki and twenty minutes at Tjarnargígur: a whole middle of the day, on top of two hours each way on F206. Tours run about nine hours from Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
Can I do the Laki loop in a small 4x4?
Only in dry weather and with the rental company’s permission, which most do not give for F206 and F207. The fords have rocky beds that catch low cars, and a high-clearance 4x4 or a Superjeep tour is the reliable answer.
