F224 Landmannalaugavegur (into Landmannalaugar)

Road notes by · Iceland Lead & Content Curator· Updated

F224 Landmannalaugavegur is the short last stretch into Landmannalaugar: about 4 km from the junction where F208 north and F225 meet, across the Námskvísl ford to the campsite and the hot spring. The ford is the only water on the northern approach, it is modest in normal conditions, and a car park on the near side with a footbridge means nobody has to drive it. It opens with F208 north in mid-June and is the reason a compact 4x4 can reach Landmannalaugar at all.

The road

F224 begins where F208 north and F225 meet in the Dómadalur plain and runs into the Landmannalaugar valley past the Frostastaðavatn turn-off. Just before the campsite the Námskvísl stream crosses the road; the camp, the hut, the hot spring and the trailheads are on the far side, a five-minute walk over the footbridge from the car park.

River crossings and the car

One modest ford, second water tier: a standard small 4x4 drives it in normal summer conditions, and after rain or in the morning melt it rises enough that the rangers turn compact cars back to the car park. Nothing is lost by parking: the walk is short and flat. Rental contracts that allow F208 north allow F224; none insure water damage.

Water tier 2: Small water crossings. A standard small 4x4 such as a Dacia Duster or Toyota RAV4, in normal summer conditions.

When it opens

With F208 north, in mid-June most years, and it closes in late September with the camp. The Landmannalaugar huts and campsite open and close on the same decision, so the road’s status below is in effect the status of Landmannalaugar itself.

Daily recording of F224's status began in October 2026; the first measured opening and closing dates appear here in summer 2027. The typical window above is the best guide until then.
