F66 Kollafjarðarheiði is the one highland road most Westfjords itineraries meet: about 37 km over a 600 m pass between Kollafjörður on the south side and Ísafjarðardjúp on the north, cutting hours off the coastal route. Its streams are minor, so a standard 4x4 copes in summer, and it opens in June and closes between late September and October.

The road

The road climbs from Kollafjörður over a bare, boulder-strewn plateau and drops to the shore of Ísafjarðardjúp near Reykjanes. It is narrow, steep in places and slow, but it replaces a long detour around the fjords for anyone driving between the southern Westfjords and Ísafjörður.

River crossings and the car

Minor streams rather than fords: second tier, a standard 4x4 in summer. A 2WD is illegal on it; the alternative is the paved and gravel coastal road, two to three hours longer.

Water tier 2: Small water crossings. A standard small 4x4 such as a Dacia Duster or Toyota RAV4, in normal summer conditions.

When it opens

June, closing between late September and October; it holds snow late in a cold year. Recorded dates are below.

Daily recording of F66's status began in October 2026; the first measured opening and closing dates appear here in summer 2027. The typical window above is the best guide until then.

How itineraries use it

Questions about F66

Can I drive F66 in a standard 4x4?

Yes, in summer: the streams are minor and the road is more rough and steep than wet, with a gradient and a drop that unsettle nervous drivers more than the water does. It needs the F-road permission in your rental contract like any F-road, and fog on the pass is common; in rain or wind, take the coastal roads around.

How much time does F66 save?

Two to three hours between the southern Westfjords and Ísafjörður compared with the coastal roads around the fjords, at the cost of a slow 37 km over the pass at 30 to 40 km/h. In good weather it is worth it for the saving and the view; in fog or rain the coast road is safer and not much slower.

When does F66 open?

June in most years, later after a snowy winter because the pass holds drifts into early summer, and it closes between late September and October. Check the live status above; the coastal Routes 60 and 61 are open all year and are the fallback whenever the pass is shut.
