Iceland in April: what it is really like, and how to plan it

By · Iceland Lead & Content Curator· Updated

April is the hinge month: long days return, the last northern lights fade mid-month, puffins and migrating birds arrive, and prices are still below summer. The highlands and most mountain hikes are shut, roads can be icy in the north, and the weather swings from snow to sun in a day, so plan a Ring Road or South Coast trip with a spare day rather than a highland one.

Iceland in April: questions people ask

Is April a good time to visit Iceland?

Good for value and daylight, mixed for weather. You get long days, cheaper hotels than summer and the first puffins, but not the highlands, and snow can still fall anywhere.

Can you see the northern lights in April in Iceland?

Until about the middle of the month, on a dark clear night away from town lights; the equinox in late March keeps activity high into early April. By late April the sun no longer gets far enough below the horizon for real darkness, and the season is over until late August. The nightly verdict on this site shows whether tonight qualifies.

Are the highlands open in April?

No. The F-roads open from early June at the earliest, and the big ones with river crossings in late June or July, so April is a lowland month. Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk can be reached on a Superjeep tour in April, which is the only sensible way; the F-road pages on this site show each road’s live status and opening dates by year.
