Fuel stations in Iceland: which towns have fuel, and the gaps between them

Checked by · Iceland Lead & Content Curator· Updated

Every town an Iceland itinerary sleeps in has fuel; the sights, the lagoon and the whole highlands do not. The first table lists the towns along each route with their pumps and fast chargers, the second the stretches where a quarter tank is not enough. Pumps are unattended and take a chip card with a PIN; the discount brands are 10 to 20 krónur a litre cheaper than the full-service ones.

How this was checked

  • Presence of a pump and of a fast charger per town was checked on 2026-10-21 against the operators' station maps (N1, Olís and ÓB, Orkan, Atlantsolía) and the charging networks (ON, Ísorka, N1). Brands change hands now and then; whether a town has fuel almost never changes.
  • Each town row has an anchor (for example #vik, #stykkisholmur) so a place guide can link straight to it.
  • Prices per litre are on the prices page; the per-day fuel cost in the budget model is on the trip-cost page.

Questions about fuel in Iceland

Are there enough petrol stations in Iceland?

On the Ring Road and the main routes, yes: every town of any size has at least one pump, most unattended and open all hours with a card and PIN. The gaps are specific and listed on this page: the Egilsstaðir to Mývatn crossing, Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Höfn, Hólmavík to Ísafjörður, and every highland road, where there is no fuel at all.

Which fuel brand is cheapest in Iceland?

Costco in Garðabær for members, then the unattended discount brands Orkan, ÓB and Atlantsolía, which are usually 10 to 20 krónur a litre under the full-service N1 and Olís pumps. Outside the towns the brand is whatever is there; the saving is small against the cost of running dry.

Do Icelandic petrol pumps take foreign cards?

Yes, with a chip and a PIN; unattended pumps ask for the PIN and some pre-authorise a large amount that drops off in a few days. A card without a PIN works only at staffed stations during opening hours, which is why a pre-paid N1 or Olís fuel card is worth buying on the first day.

Is there fuel in the Icelandic highlands?

No. Landmannalaugar, Hveravellir, Kerlingarfjöll, Askja and Þórsmörk have none; the single pumps at Hrauneyjar and Möðrudalur are seasonal and sometimes empty. Fill at the last town (Hella, Mývatn, Gullfoss side at Reykholt or Flúðir, Blönduós) and plan every highland day on one tank.

Where should I fill up on the Ring Road?

Selfoss or Hella before the South Coast; Vík; Kirkjubæjarklaustur before the 200 km to Höfn; Höfn before the fjords; Egilsstaðir before the desert; Akureyri (the cheapest in the north); Blönduós or Staðarskáli; Borgarnes before Snæfellsnes or the north. Keep the tank above a quarter from October to April, when a closed pass can add 100 km.
