Iceland in February: what it is really like, and how to plan it

By · Iceland Lead & Content Curator· Updated

February keeps everything that makes January good (lights, ice caves, snow, low prices) and adds two to three hours of daylight, which makes the South Coast as far as the Glacier Lagoon a comfortable winter week. Storms still close the passes; keep the plan south and west, drive a 4x4, and build in a spare day.

Daylight and darkness

On the 15th of February the sun is up for 8.7 hours in Reykjavík, from 09:26 to 18:06. The sky is fully dark for 11.8 hours, enough for the northern lights on a clear night. One of the best months: long nights, slightly clearer skies than midwinter, and the run-up to the equinox lifts activity.

Iceland in February: questions people ask

Is February good for the northern lights in Iceland?

Yes, among the best months. Nights are still 14 hours long, cloud is a little less constant than in December and January, and geomagnetic activity picks up toward the March equinox.

Are the ice caves open in February?

Yes. The crystal caves under Vatnajökull run from about mid-November to March by guided tour from Jökulsárlón, and February is prime: the ice is at its most stable before the spring melt, and the days are long enough for a morning tour and an afternoon at the lagoon. The Katla cave near Vík runs all year. Book four to eight weeks ahead.

What is the weather like in Iceland in February?

Around freezing on the coast, a few degrees colder inland, windy, with snow and ice on the ground everywhere outside Reykjavík and often in it. Storms close the mountain passes for a day or two at a time, so keep a spare day in the plan. The ten-year averages for four towns, and the daylight for the 15th, are computed on this page.
