Iceland Trip vs ChatGPT for planning Iceland
Tested and written by Nimrod Ron · Iceland Lead & Content Curator· Updated
ChatGPT writes a fluent Iceland itinerary in seconds, and about half of them would go wrong on the road: drives estimated at half their real length, eight stops a day, a 2WD on an F-road, an ice cave in July or a hotel that does not exist. It is excellent for ideas, wording and questions; it is not a planner. Iceland Trip builds the same day-by-day plan from a database of real places and roads, checks it against your car and month, and lets you change it in plain language, free.
Side by side
| What matters in Iceland | Iceland Trip | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Driving times | Computed from road distances at Iceland speeds, plus time at each stop | Estimated from text; routinely half the real figure on gravel and in winter |
| Roads and your car | Every F-road and gravel road matched to the car you rent; a 2WD never gets an F-road | Often sends a 2WD to Landmannalaugar or Þórsmörk |
| Season | Daylight for your dates; highland roads, ice caves and boat tours only in their season | Ice caves in July, F-roads in October, northern lights in June |
| Places and hotels | A curated database of real places, verified hikes and bookable activities | Plausible names that sometimes do not exist, or closed years ago |
| Pacing | Three or four real stops a day, two-night stays where they help | Reykjavík to Jökulsárlón and back in a day |
| Changing the plan | Ask in plain language; only the affected days are rewritten and re-checked | A new answer each time, with new mistakes |
| While you travel | Live weather, road status, bad-weather alternatives, a PDF, sharing with your party | A chat transcript |
| Price | Free; an optional $39 expert add-on | Free or a monthly subscription |

Iceland Trip vs ChatGPT: questions
Can ChatGPT plan an Iceland itinerary?
It can write one, and it reads well. The problems are in the facts: driving times, which roads a rental car may use, what is open in your month, and whether the hotel it names exists. Of the self-made and chatbot plans run through the free itinerary checker, most had at least one of those problems. Use it for ideas and check the plan before you book anything.
Is Iceland Trip just ChatGPT with a different skin?
No. The itinerary is built from a database of real Iceland places, hikes and activities and from the rules that make a day work (Iceland driving speeds, daylight, road and season rules, river-crossing tiers). An AI model writes the descriptions and helps with changes, but it cannot invent a stop, a road or a hotel.
Can I check a ChatGPT itinerary for free?
Yes. Paste it into the itinerary checker and in about 15 seconds you get the driving time per day, the car and season problems, and the pacing issues, with fixes.
Which is cheaper?
Both are free for the basics. Iceland Trip’s only paid option is a $39 one-time add-on that puts a real Iceland expert on call from a week before the trip until it ends, inside the plan’s chat tab. Everything else, including the itinerary, the checker, the data pages and the PDF export, costs nothing.
