Itinerary from 13.8 to 23.8 in Iceland: landing and car pickup, the Selfoss and Hella area, a drive to Landmannalaugar, the Westman Islands, the South Coast, lagoons and glaciers in the southeast, Kerlingarfjöll, the Golden Circle, a lava cave and West Iceland, and finally Reykjavík and the Reykjanes Peninsula. The route includes driving on F-roads and requires a 4x4; the itinerary's guidance stresses avoiding water crossings.
An Iceland trip expert planned this 11-day route for a real client's August trip: South Coast, the Highlands and the Westman Islands. It passed our checks for daily driving, highland roads and season, which is why it is one of the 177 expert-built plans in our Iceland itineraries.
The day-by-day plan below has every stop, with photos and what to see. Duplicate it to set your own dates, change the pace or swap stops; the original stays as the expert wrote it.

Lodging options in the Hella area are suggested, including Guesthouse Farmer, Loa's Nest, Landhotel and Selalækur Country Guesthouse.
The route explicitly enters the Landmannalaugar reserve. F-road driving is required; the guidance recommends parking before the access fords, walking about 300 m, and avoiding deep water crossings.
The ferry has a booking link, and the boat trip between the islands has a booking link, but neither matches the allowed bookable_activities values in the list.
The lava show has a booking link, but it does not match any of the allowed categories.
The glacier lagoon kayaking is shown with a booking link.
The Mika booking link is for a restaurant, not an experience from the allowed list.
The route explicitly enters Kerlingarfjöll. Access is via the F35 and requires a 4x4; it notes that all rivers along the way are bridged.
The snowmobile tour is shown with a booking link for 14:00.
An off-road route on the F550 and F551 is described, but there are no river crossings or booked experiences from the list.
Víðgelmir cave has a ticket booking link for 09:00. The Menningarnótt event is listed on 22 August 2025.
Perlan has a ticket booking link for 10:00; the museum is described as having an ice cave. The apartment/hotel near the airport is shown as an accommodation option, with no explicit flight details.
